The CFA® Program

The CFA® Program is a professional certification course offered by CFA Institute. It is the globally recognized designation of excellence in investment community. The course curriculum helps in building and enhancing knowledge in the areas of Portfolio Management, Valuation and Corporate Finance.

The CFA® Exam

The course includes a series of three exams – Levels I, II, and III.
CFA Institute offers the exams in June and December (Level I only) every year. Candidates have to pass the levels sequentially. Language of the exam is English only.
The exam content, learning focus and question format increases in complexity with each level.

Requirements to earn the CFA® Charter

In order to become CFA Charterholder, you must:

  • Pass all three levels I, II & III with each having rigorous six-hour exams.
  • Also you need to have at least four years of professional investment experience (earned before, during, or after participation in the Program)
  • Consequently you will become a regular member of CFA Institute and thereafter you commit to abide by CFA Institute’s Code of Professional Conduct
The CFA® Exam Structure

CFA Institute conducts Exam in 3 Levels –

  • Level I exam twice every year in June and December
  • Level II and III Exams once every year in June

Level I exam, consists of 240 multiple choice questions, conducting in two sessions in same day.
The morning session timings are 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon and consists of 120 questions.
And the evening session timings are 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM and consists of 120 questions.
Each multiple choice question is not dependent on other questions and has three possible answers: A, B, and C.
All questions are equally weighted.
There is no negative marking for wrong answer.

Time needed to prepare for the Exam

Candidate’s preparation times will vary based on their prior professional experience level, academic backgrounds, and familiarity with the concepts tested on the curriculum. Therefore, it is difficult to recommend a particular number of hours to dedicate to studying.
A survey indicates that, on average, individuals devoted about 300 hours to exam preparation per level.

Types of work CFA® charter-holders do

The Charter will open up opportunities in the areas of Equity Research, Portfolio Management, Corporate Finance, Credit Analysis, Trading, Investment Banking, Investment Analysis, Wealth Management, Private Equity, and Valuation. As per the data study, portfolio managers are the largest single group of charterholders.
